What Does a Birth Doula Actually Do? A Seattle Doula Explains
If you’ve heard the word “doula” but aren’t totally sure what one does, you’re in good company. It’s one of the most common questions I get, and honestly, it’s a great place to start. So let’s get into it.
A Doula Is Not a Midwife
This is the big one. A midwife is a medical provider who catches babies, monitors vitals, and makes clinical decisions. A doula has zero medical role. What we do is show up for you — emotionally, physically, and informationally — from early labor through delivery and beyond. Think of us as your hype person who also knows a lot about birth.
So What Do We Actually Do?
Here’s what continuous birth doula support looks like in real life:
Physical comfort measures like positioning, counter pressure, breathing techniques, and movement to help you ride out contractions. Emotional support that keeps you grounded when things get intense. Informational guidance so you understand what’s happening and what questions to ask your care team. Partner support so your person feels confident and included, not like they’re just standing in the corner. And advocacy assistance to make sure your voice and preferences are actually heard.
We Support All Kinds of Births
One of the biggest misconceptions about doulas is that we’re only for unmedicated or “natural” births. Not even a little bit true. Epidural? Great. C-section? We’re there. Home birth? Absolutely. My job is never to push an agenda. It’s to support your choices, full stop.
When Does a Doula Show Up?
I’m on call for you around the clock as your due date gets close. When labor begins, I join you wherever you are — at home in early labor, at a birth center, or at a Seattle hospital like Swedish or UW Medical Center. I stay with you continuously through delivery and those first moments with your baby.
What About Before and After?
Doula support doesn’t start in the labor room. Before your birth we meet for prenatal sessions to talk through your hopes, concerns, birth preferences, and comfort techniques. After your baby arrives I check in, help you process your birth experience, and make sure you feel good as you settle into this wild new chapter.
